No Doubt’s ‘Just a Girl’
On Friday night at The Met Philadelphia, 19-year-old pop singer Olivia Rodrigo paid homage to Gwen Stefani and No Doubt with a cover of their breakthrough hit “Just a Girl.” It was an ideal choice; released as the lead single from their third studio album Tragic Kingdom (1995), the song marked No Doubt’s major breakthrough into mainstream music – peaking at number 23 on Billboard Hot 100.
This track is a feminist anthem, featuring lyrics like “Don’t fence me in/don’t lock me up/don’t tell me I’m not enough.” It’s one of No Doubt’s most iconic songs and one of the most covered songs ever with more than 17 million downloads worldwide.
No Doubt began as a duo in 1986 but nearly broke up when their original lead singer John Spence tragically passed away. Ultimately, they signed to Interscope Records in 1991 and released their self-titled debut the following year.
Gwen Stefani and Tom Dumont’s breakthrough single, “Just a Girl,” was produced by Matthew Wilder and became No Doubt’s first US hit single, peaking at number 23 on Billboard Hot 100.
Florence + the Machine recently released an exclusive dark cover of this song, which can now be streamed and downloaded via SHOWTIME.
